If you have never cleaned or conditioned a saddle or tack before, the task may seem daunting so we have put together 7 easy steps to help you care for your tack plus a suggested starter kit of what tools of the trade you may want to have handy. 

What You’ll Need

  • A bucket of warm water
  • Sponges or cloths for cleaning and conditioning
  • Dry towels for drying and buffing
  • Your favorite leather cleaner and conditioner (we like Lexol leather care products)

Nice to have, but not necessary

  • Saddle rack
  • Cleaning hook
  • Metal polish and cloth
  • Soft brush or covered sponge for light scrubbing

Step One: Apply cleaner to a wet sponge or towel

Step Two: Clean one section at a time.  Work up foam to lift dirt out.

Step Three: Use clean wet sponge or cloth to rinse.

Step Four: Towel dry.  This ready’s the tack so it can absorb the Conditioner.

Step Five: Apply conditioner to clean sponge or cloth.

Step Six: Apply conditioner to cleaned surface.

Step Seven: Give final wipe down after 20 to 30 minutes

and enjoy the great look!
